Frank Ocean video screenshots

Throughout all Frank Ocean's videos he uses a consistent theme of animals, the weather is typically nice and the setting is usually at night just as the sun is setting. He uses a consisetent theme of water and displays lots of shots of waves, fire, rain and the sea in his videos, so its all very weather based. He never has the camera effects in the default settings and uses colour effects alot to set the scene, for example a hot day he'll use oranges and yellows. All his videos are similar and he is always displayed in them throughout.

Video Analysis

Music Video Textual Analysis

Introduction
I am analysing ‘Lana Del Rey – Born to die’ video that is directed by Yoann Lemoine, the music video is Alternative, Indie & Pop genre, the video includes very few characteristics of the genre other than being very individual and different to the music videos we’d see everyday, the effects used also help us recognise the genre of the video without listening to the actual music. the clothes worn help us too, lana is co-starred in the video with ‘boyfriend’ bradley soileau, they are featured at the beginning both standing naked hugging with the american flag in the background waving slowly, which is something particularly different to what we would expect to see in your everyday music video.
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
In the video, we learn its a love story about a girl (Lana) and boyfriend (Bradley), its about finding someone that made her happy and how it was so different she had felt before in her life. most of the lyrics and the video flow together, as she demonstrates being in love she sings about it too. examples of this are; “lets go get high” when she is smoking cannabis. “let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain” when she is kissing him. “we were born to die” she sings whilest in the video whispering the words into his ear. “lost but now i am found” whilest she says lost she is lying alone on the bed, & when she says “but now i am found” a shadow passes across her and her boyfriend suddenly appears. when she says “you like your girls insane” she circles her finger by her head, which people generally do to signify being mad, crazy etc.
What is the relationship between music and visuals?
the music is mostly slow throughout, and the video is too, the actions and movement of the people in the video and the camera movement is also slow. at the begininning of the video there is a single instrumental solo, which lasts for about 15 seconds. the video speed is consistent throughout with the lyrics, although the beat doesnt get particularly faster.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
The video portait Lana as being a particularly romantic character, very much in love & strong minded as she believes we all were born in order to eventually die. all of the artists videos are pretty similar, which helps the audience get a idea of the artist and also the music she creates. there are no motifs that have been used in her past videos, cd covers or posters used.
Is there reference to the notion of looking?
Throughout the video a relationship with lana and her boyfriend is shown. they display a very tense, sexual atmosphere but never is anything explicit shown. at the tense moments the camera is very close up to the characters & we feel the sense of tension.
Are there intertextual references?
There are no obvious relations to any other music videos the artist has done in the past or any other things.
Is the music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based?
The video is very much narrative based as it tells a story of two people that are in love, the lyrics tell the video as it goes along.
Conclusion
The video is overall intended to stand out and look different to any other, the whole video and sound of lana’s voice is quite different and individual, to usual mainstream videos & its difficult to know what to expect, like her old videos she has a constant flow of being different, unique and individual.. we learn the video isnt just music and lyrics and there is a story behind the music, if you study it closely you learn it isnt just about her believing that she thinks we were ‘born to die’ but it actually is quite deeper than that, she cleverly uses lyrics that are relatable to the audience enticing them to be interested in the song as they understand it more. the clothes that she wears also helps us understand the genre, in this case its mainly alternative and individual and the clothes that she wears are not what you’d expect to see in your everyday mainstream video, everything she wears is quite daring and you’d expect to see particularly ‘different’ people wearing what she does.

Magazine Proposal for M+SM Magazine.
I feel people should want to read my magazine as it offers a variety of features that other magazines don’t have or don’t cover as well as mine does.  It’s extremely versatile and offers information on all music genres; therefore it can be bought by anyone with a remote interest in music. I believe it will be more popular than other music magazines because we cover all aspects of the music world rather than focusing on just one thing. Unlike other music magazines, we go out of our way to help new bands to get recognition they deserve, which we believe the audience will find a brilliant feature as the majority of them most probably being musicians or people that aspire to do something within music, and people who are interested in finding music for them. Our competitions are magazines such as NME, Kerrang! Magazine and Q magazine, therefore we will try our hardest to differentiate from them.

My magazine is called M+SM which stands for ‘Music and Sound Magazine’ it’s called this because it purely focuses’ on both new and old music and all things musically related and nothing else. A sans serif typeface will be used on the magazine to give it a more attractive, appropriate and inviting look rather than a serif typeface which I feel would represent the magazine incorrectly as a lot more serious and I feel, boring. The main image of my magazine will star a female/male music artist that is popular and well known in order for it to be more likely to attract people due to recognition of the artist. The image will be full length and will always coordinate with the coloring of the text in some way to make the magazine look more subtle, attractive and give it a calmer vibe. When placing the image on the magazine cover I will ensure that the face appears in the top third of the page, in order to gain attraction. The majority of the time I will use a straight on shot to create eye contact and attract the audience, although sometimes I will use a different shot angle. The main images will be taken in a studio so that way it’s much easier to create the vibe/theme the magazine is going for on that particular occasion, however sometimes they will be taken in an outdoor area (e.g. A deserted place or against a plain background) this way we can achieve the look we’re going for with the cover with great ease and vary the location. The clothes the artist will wear will be the clothes that you would typically expect to see them in (e.g. A rapper in baggy jeans) this way the artist will be instantly recognized  however we will ensure the clothes they wear will be fashionable to make the cover more attractive. A couple of cover lines I will use will be ’98 Song Reviews’ and ‘Free iTunes voucher’ their purpose is to attract the audience into wanting to purchase the magazine and read more, therefore I decided to use lines that would be appealing to the target audience in order to do so. I will use ’98 Song Reviews’ because 98 is an odd number therefore should be more attractive rather than using an even number and I feel as it’s a music magazine people will want to know what’s good and what isn't  ‘Free iTunes voucher’ will be used and offered to the audience to encourage people to buy the magazine in order to redeem the voucher, also as I believe the audience would have a passion for music, they would not decline an opportunity to get it for free.  I won’t use any graphics and the layout will be sparse in order to give the magazine a clean look, without too many things to look at at once, which I feel would be off-putting and busy to the audience and wouldn't achieve the look the magazine is going for.

My target audience is mainly people between the ages of 15-35 interested in music, music reviews, upcoming bands and artists, gigs and concerts, interviews with music artists, music artists and their looks, and music technology/equipment. I will aim to attract this audience by basing my magazine around all of the things stated previously and I will do surveys based on my magazine to find out what people want.

Questionaire Results

From my results I found out that 4 females and 6 males took part in my questionnaire. Half the people I asked were between ages of 11 - 20 and the other half were between 21 - 41+. The majority of them bought magazines and all the questioned but one found the cover effected whether they were to purchase the magazine or not. The majority would pay 2 pounds - 2 pounds 50, This helped me to come to a price for my magazine & decide how I should create my cover and finding out that the majority found it important made me eager to make the cover the best I could.

Movie Poster Analysis: 30 Days of Night

what genre is the film? the film is horror
what genre conventions of the form are used? from the poster you can tell that its a tense scene from the movie as the man upfront looks cautious and the girl looks fearful, in red behind the girl it says 'They're coming' with a group of people in the background, the colours used and the facial expressions on the actors faces, in the bottom right corner shows the face of the demons in the film, there face looks frightening which gives us a clue that its a horror also the text font used is commonly used to advertise horror movies. the lighting is very dark and the colour temperature is low.

which conventions of the form are used? on the movie poster it displays a billing block, title,  and a small review from James Dyer.  There is also a star rating and a release date and a web address.

Describe the mise-en-scene in detail including location, lighting, costume and makeup. the location is northern alaska where they are in what looks like snow covered land the lighting is very dark and the costume is typical cold weather clothes that you would wear in the weather conditions that are displayed, the makeup on the girl is dark and subtle.

What symbols are used in the poster? do you need audience foreknowledge to decode the symbols?  a group of bloodthirsty vampires in the background give the audience a clue as to the genre and what the film may be about. the people look fearful for what may be round the corner. the man is holding a axe and it gives you a clue as to there may be killing in the film which automatically makes

Audio Post

I created a podcast in garage band of a conversation between Adam and Spencer. I added various sound effects and jingles to make the media more exciting. I also changed the speech by cropping and selecting different bits of speech and rearranging it to make fun sentences. I changed the volume of different loops at different times so that certain sounds would dominate over each other at different times.
